PURPOSE:To improve the operability of a document processor by using a substituting device to perform substitution processing regardless of a substitution command in case candidate data is retrieved out of a user memory. CONSTITUTION:An input means for inputting the input data on characters and symbols and the substitution command data is provided. The input data on characters and symbols are stored in a text memory. A fixed memory can perform substitution with the input data and the input data stored by a user and the replaceable candidate data is stored in a user memory. The candidate data corresponding to the input data is retrieved by a retrieving means via both fixed and user memories. Then the input data is replaced with the retrieved candidate data only in case a substitution command is inputted from an input device when the candidate data is retrieved out of the fixed memory. While the substitution processing is carried out regardless of the substitution command in case the candidate data is retrieved from the user memory.
