PURPOSE:To improve a non-linear optical effect by forming two upper and lower bases, forming a part of an interval between both the bases so as to be narrower than the other part about a face vertical to a light transmitting direction and forming an optical waveguide having high non-linear optical characteristics on the narrow interval part. CONSTITUTION:In a plane non-linear optical element whose center part consists of a material having high non-linear optical characteristics and peripheral part consists of a transparent material (contains air also) having an objective wavelength area, two upper and lower bases 1 are formed. An interval 3, a part of the interval between both the bases 1, is formed so as to be narrower than the other interval 4 about the face vertical to the light transmitting direction and the optical waveguide 5 having high non-linear optical characteristics is formed on the narrow interval part 3. Since the center layer of the optical waveguide 5 is formed on a restricted narrow part in the horizontal direction, light sealing can be effectively executed and the element with high efficiency can be obtained.
