A cathode rod ensuring the extraction of the current from a cell for the production of aluminium by electrolysis by the Hall-Héroult process, sealed into at least one groove 7 open at the base of each of the carbon blocks 1 forming the cathode of the electrolysis cell. The cathode rod 2 is extended by a metal soleplate 5 in electrical contact with the base of the carbon blocks 1 over at least 20 % of the total surface area of this base. The soleplate 5 consists of metal sheet with a thickness of at least 4 mm and preferably of at least 10 mm welded to the cathode rod 2 before the carbon block 1 is placed in the cell. The cathode rod which is the subject of the invention decreases substantially the voltage drop at the iron-carbon contact and improves the distribution of the cathode current in the whole cathode.

|
