PURPOSE:To detect an opening malfunction of the throttle valve, by installing a malfunction judging device detecting something wrong in the valve, when a time variation in an accelerator manipulated variable is within the specified variation and that in an air suction quantity is more than the specified variation. CONSTITUTION:If a driver operates an accelerator, an electronic controller (ECU)30 receives a signal from an accelerator sensor 20, finding a time variation in an accelerator manipulated variable. On the other hand, it receives a signal from a suction pressure sensor 12, detecting an air suction quantity, and it finds the time variation of the detected value. Next, the time variation in the accelerator manipulated variable is compared with that in an air quantity each, and when the time variation in the accelerator manipulated variable is within the specified variation as well as when the time variation in the air suction quantity is more than the specified one, such output as showing something wrong takes place. Therefore, a malfunction of the throttle valve is detectable without installing a throttle sensor.
