1-Substituted naphthyridines and pyridopyrazines are of formula <CHEM> wherein: X is =CH-, =CY- or =N-; A is O or S; m is an integer from 0 to 2; n is an integer from 0 to 2; R<1> is H, alkyl, halogenated alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkenyl, halo, or -DZR<5> (wherein D is alkanedinyl, Z is - @-, -O-, -O- @-, - @-O-, -S(O)p- (wherein p is 0, 1, or 2) or <CHEM> (wherein R<6> is H or alkyl), and R<5> is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted by 1 to 3 Y groups); R<2> is alkyl, halogenated alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkenyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl in which the phenyl rings may be substituted with 1 to 3 Y groups, -D-Z-R<5> (wherein D, Z and R<5> are as defined above), -Z-R<5>, -O-(E-O)q-R<5> (wherein q is 1, 2, 3 or 4, E represents alkanediyl), CON(R<7>)2 (wherein each R<7> independently is H or alkyl), or -CN; each R<3> and R<4> is H or alkyl; Q represents an aryl or an aromatic heterocyclic group which can optionally be substituted with from 1 to 3 substituents Y; and each Y substituent is independently selected from -OR<6>, alkyl, halo, -NO2, -CF3, -CN, cycloalkyl, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, -S(O)p-R<8> wherein R<8> is alkyl), -CO-R<9> (wherein R<9> represents R<5>, N(R<7>)2 or OR<6>), -O-D-COR<9>, -N(R<7>)2 or -NH(CO)H are disclosed which are useful in treating allergic reactions, inflammation, peptic ulcers and hyperproliferative skin diseases and in suppressing the immune response in mammals. Pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treatment employing such compounds are also disclosed.
