PURPOSE:To attain color reproduction with fidelity to an original by reading an auxiliary coefficient to apply color correcting processing to a read color original and setting it based on a value of a color picture signal so as to very accurately set the color correction coefficient. CONSTITUTION:At first an original 1 is read by a solid-state image pickup element 6, a signal is sampled by a proper sampling pitch and stored in a memory 22. The signal stored in the memory 22 is fed to an arithmetic unit 23, where a color correction coefficient for a linear converter 16, is decided to the signal. The coefficient is set as the linear conversion coefficient of the linear converter 16' to apply actual copying process. Through the method above, it is not required for the operator to align the color for each original and the color reproduction always fidelity to the original is attained.
