PURPOSE:To preclude output variation and an error based upon fluctuations of the plane of polarization of light on an optical path by passing two light components which are polarized in mutually orthogonal directions through a counterclockwise and a clockwise optical fiber respectively and adding the passed light components together. CONSTITUTION:The output light of a light source 1 is branched by a beam splitter 2 to an (x)-axial polarizer 8 and a (y)-axial polarizer 3. The (x)-axial polarized component passed through the (x)-axial polarizer 8 is incident on the end surface (b) of an optical fiber 4 through mirrors 9 and 10 and a beam splitter 4 to travel in the fiber 5 counterclockwise, and the light is inputted to an (x) polarized component detector 11 through the same elements 10, 9, and 8 and beam splitter 6 with incident light. Light passed through the (y)-axial polarizer 3, on the other hand, travels clockwise in the optical fiber 5 from its end (a) and is inputted to a (y)-axial polarized component detector 7 through the elements 3, 2, and 6. The output signals of the detectors 7 and 11 are summed up by an adder 12 and the rotating angular velocity is found from the sum quantity of light.
