An eccentric crank (18) is supported on a body (22) for rotation about an axis normal to a cylindrical bore (24) in the body. Within this body is a piston (40) reciprocated responsive to crank rotation. The piston has a frusto-spherical shape with a max. dia. equal to the bore dia.. Between the piston and crank is a connecting rod. - The upper and lower diameters at the ends of the piston are such as to maintain a continuous normal plane of contact with the bore during piston movement. The piston can have a solid upper truncation (58) and a hollow interior that is open to a lower truncation to form a piston skirt (62).
