PURPOSE:To also accurately measure the distance between objects hourly moving such as trains at the time of automatic connection, by providing light sources on each of the objects at two points and modulating the light sources under different conditions. CONSTITUTION:In a transmitting apparatus 1 provided to one vehicle, modulation circuits 12, 13 modulate the currents supplied to light emitting elements on the basis of the signals of frequencies fA, fB supplied from an oscillation circuit 14. The lights emitted from the elements 10, 11 thus modulated are transmitted to the receiving apparatus 2 provided to the other vehicle and formed into images on a semiconductive position detecting element 21. The element 21 outputs the currents I1, I2 corresponding to the positions of the images formed on the surface thereof to respective electrodes 21a, 21b. Said currents I1, I2 are respectively supplied to light receiving circuits 22, 23 which in turn discriminate only the respective frequencies fA, fB to output DC signal voltages having the values proportional to the magnitudes of the signal current thereof and block disturbance light noise. These DC signal voltages are supplied to position operation parts 24, 25 to operate the image forming position data on the element 21. Said data are supplied to a distance operation part 26.
