PURPOSE:To contrive higher printing quality, by printing through changing printing period to a printing period corresponding to a desired character pitch when it is necessary to change character pitch. CONSTITUTION:When a request for a block change is given, it is checked whether line printing is finished, and when the line printing is finished, a printing process is finished, whereas when the line printing is not finished, a printing block is updated. According to character pitch information in the block thus updated, a printing mode parameter Pm for a new character pitch is set, and the printing process 100 is executed in the same manner as for the preceding block. After the block change, a timer for head period is started at a new head ON period, and column data are gradually outputted at the new character pitch. Thus, a changeover to a different character pitch can be performed without any blocking action.
