The device uses a wound surface filter contained within a metal housing having feed and return connections for the exhaust gas flow. The fliter insert divides a dirty exhaust gas chamber from a clean exhaust gas chamber, with a controlled electrical current for burning the exhaust emission deposits on the filter via an electrode configuration. The electrodes are provided by the winding cage for the wound filter band formed by roving threads extending parallel to the periphery of the winding cage perpendicular to its axis.
