PURPOSE:To enhance the activity of the catalyst for the Bosch reaction by oxidizing the surface of the metal-wire catalyst to form a metal oxide, and then reducing and removing the metal oxide on the surface by gaseous hydrogen to increase the surface of the metal-wire catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a metal-wire catalyst base material 1 is transiently oxidized to form a metal oxide layer 2 on the surface. Fine ruggedness (at the part 2) is formed at the boundary between the iron oxide layer 2 and the metal-wire base material 1 due to the grain boundary, etc. The iron oxide layer 2 is heated and reduced by sending gaseous hydrogen to remove oxygen, and hence finer ruggedness remains on the surface. The metal-wire catalyst is packed in a reactor, and the Bosch reaction is carried out. Namely, the surface area of the metal-wire catalyst to be used in the Bosch reaction is increased, and the activity of the metal-wire catalyst is enhanced.
