PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled substance which is monomer for a heat- resistant polymer, by using an easily available inexpensive iodinated biphenyl or iodinated diphenyl ether as a raw material and reacting the material with a phenol in the presence of a basic substance, etc. CONSTITUTION:Iodinated biphenyl or iodinated diphenyl ether is used as a raw material and is made to react with a phenol at 100-300 deg.C, preferably 150-250 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst comprising a copper compound or an iron compound [e.g. CuO, CuBr, Cu(OH)2, FeO, Fe(OH)2, FeCl3, etc.] and a basic compound. The amount of the catalyst is 0.1-100mol%, preferably 0.5-30mol% based on the iodinated compound. The starting compound can be easily synthesized e.g. by reacting biphenyl or diphenyl ether with iodine in the presence of an acid and hydrogen peroxide. |
