PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound by iodinating biphenyl or dipheny ether in the presence of an oxidizing agent, reacting the obtained diiodinated product with CO in the presence of a basic substance and hydrolyzing the resultant monocarboxylic acid, and to recycle and reuse the produced iodine. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (n is 0 or 1) is made to react with iodine in the presence of an oxidizing agent (e.g. nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, etc.) to obtain a diiodinated compound in high para-selectivity. The product is reacted with Co in the presence of a basic substance (e.g. NaOH, triethyl-amine) to afford a compound of formula II (R is H, alkyl or allyl) and an iodide. The compound is hydrolyzed in an aqueous solution containing a basic compound to obtain the compound of formula III and an iodinated substance. The iodide and the iodinated substance and converted to iodine by electrolytic oxidation or oxidation with chlorine and returned to the iodination reaction step. The objective compound can be produced from an easily available raw material with simple process in high yield. There is little production of by-product.
