PURPOSE:To obtain a reproduced image with the best picture quality and to demodulate a PCM audio signal with a low error rate, by switching the frequency characteristics of an equalizer circuit so that a reproduction signal obtained through a magnetic head can be corrected at an optimum frequency characteristic for the PCM audio signal and a video signal. CONSTITUTION:First and second equalizer circuits 5 and 6 which correct the reproduction signals SPBA and SPBB obtained through first and second magnetic heads 2A and 2B, are provided. And the frequency characteristics of the first and the second equalizer circuit 5 and 6 are switched in a period while the first and the second magnetic heads 2A and 2B scan an audio signal recording are ARA, and the period while they scan a video signal recording area ARV. In such way, the frequency characteristics of the reproduction signals SPBA and SPBB can be corrected at the optimum frequency characteristics for the video signal and the PCM audio signal, respectively, and the reproduced image with the best picture quality can be obtained, and also, the PCM audio signal can be demodulated with the low error rate.
