PURPOSE:To attain an optimum recording by detecting the level of video reproduction at a prescribed timing and a prescribed reproduction output range and storing the recording level of a recording means at the timing when the level of a reproduction output is maximum with the error ratio of PCM signals within a permissible range. CONSTITUTION:A microcomputer part 30 always monitors the mean of the error ratios in each action time and the level of the reproduction output. If the part 30 detects that the mean of the error ratios just after time (t) exceeds the prescribed permissible range L and if a switch 40 is set in a picture quality preferential mode, the reading of a register given to a DA converter is stored in a memory 31. At that time a video signal is recorded at a recording time when a maximum video signal reproduction output of a video signal is recorded in the permissible range of the error ratio of reproduction PCM signals. Thus the level of the reproduction output can be recorded most suitably.
