A display device with a horizontal deflection unit, a vertical deflection unit and a brightness control device is provided. The horizontal deflection unit and, via a stairstep generator, the vertical deflection unit are driven by means of a reference clock. The clock to be measured is used for driving the brightness control. Each clock pulse of the reference clock produces a line deflection of the display beam and then a line jump. Each clock pulse of the measuring clock generates a luminous spot for each line. A vertical measuring curve is generated which represents the variation and the frequency of the deviation of the clock from the reference clock.
