In a device for a toothed-rack mechanism, in particular for toothed-rack steering gear for motor vehicles, having a compression element which keeps the toothed rack engaged with the drive pinion and is displaceably guided in the housing of the toothed rack mechanism, and having a pressure space which is bounded by the pressure element and into which a hydraulic medium can be fed, the pressure space corresponds to a non-return valve which permits hydraulic medium to flow in but not flow out. The device is preferably constructed as a closed system with a pressure space and a supply space.
