An armrest for seats of vehicles, in particular motor vehicles, which can pivot about a spindle fixed to the vehicle has a locking device which, in the event of a given vehicle deceleration, comes into effect, owing to the forces of inertia taking effect during said deceleration, such that it locks the armrest in the folded-back position thereof. On the spindle which is fixed to the vehicle there are fastened, within the contours of the armrest, latching means which interact with opposite counter-latching means which are arranged in the body of the armrest such that they can move in a floating manner counter to the resistance of the spring. Owing to the fact that the abovementioned locking mechanism is accommodated in the armrest and not in the bearing brackets of the same, said bearing brackets may be of narrower construction, thus improving space conditions in the armrest, it being possible for the parts to be designed with more generous dimensions. Furthermore, the locking mechanism in question is distinguished by a simple design and easy mountability.
