PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by hydrogenating a reaction mixture obtained by coupling 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol oxidatively without isolation in a specific two layer system of water and an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formulaI(R is tert-butyl) is coupled oxidatively in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to give a mixture of compounds expressed by formulas II and III. In the process, the formation ratio between the compounds expressed by formulas II and III is not limited, and the complicated adjustment of the amount of oxygen need not be carried out. An organic solvent, having a high solubility in the resultant mixture, and immiscible with water, e.g. a halogenomethane such as chloroform or carbon tetrachloride, a 5-7C hydrocarbon such as hexane, or benzene, toluene or xylene (BTX), particularly chloroform, is added to the resultant mixture to form two layers, which are then hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give the aimed compound of formula IV with a high efficiency. |
