In order to adjust the optimised quantity of moistening agent on the plate cylinder of an offset printer, the distribution of the quantity of moistening agent at right angles to the direction of printing is recorded by means of search passes of the motoring head. After the critical zone corresponding to the instantaneous printing conditions is found, the measuring head is positioned there and the quantity of moistening agent is adjusted to the desired value. When the printing conditions change, after a settling time in which a direct follow-on control of the quantity of moistening agent can be performed, a search pass for the new critical zone is triggered. <IMAGE>
