The connecting-rod bearing centre point of all hitherto known crank drives of internal-combustion engines describes a circular path during a crankshaft revolution. The maximum lever arm for generating the maximum torque therefore corresponds to half the piston stroke. In order to achieve a greater lever arm and therefore a higher torque during the same piston stroke, it is therefore expedient to cause the connecting-rod bearing centre point to execute an elliptic path during a revolution, as is explained in the description of the invention. Inventiveness is based on the fact that a higher torque is achieved for the same piston force and same piston stroke, so that, for this elliptic crank drive, the factor 716.2 in the formula Md = 716.2 . (N)/n is no longer true.
