The invention relates to a bean topping-and-tailing machine having a horizontal drum which can be rotated about its longitudinal central axis and on the inside wall of which there are fastened annular metal sheets which are arranged in planes which are perpendicular to the aforementioned longitudinal central axis and, with their inside annular edges, form a helical passage for the beans over the length of the drum. To ensure that the beans are treated gently, it is proposed according to the invention that inside the aforementioned helical passage there be arranged a deflection device for the beans dropping from the upper region of the drum, which device screens off the lower annular edges of the annular sheets in each case.
