PURPOSE:To improve durability and a sealing property by providing a stepped bead consisting of a flat part and inclined parts on both sides of said flat part surrounding a combustion chamber hole on a base plate made of an elastic metal plate, and making its spring constant larger the more removed a position is from a bolt clamping site. CONSTITUTION:A stepped bead consisting of a flat part 12a and inclined step parts 12b on both sides is provided surrounding a combustion chamber hole 6 on a metal gasket 2 which is installed in between a joining part, and its spring constant is made small as a whole. As a result, a clamping force can be made smaller to avoid damage to a joining surface by the bead while preventing the permanent set of the bead. Also, the width of the flat part of the stepped bead is formed in such a way that the spring constant in a position between bolt holes 8, 8 which is removed from the bolt clamping sites, or the bolt holes 8, 8 is larger than that near the bolt hole 8. As a result, a uniform surface pressure can be applied to the joining surface, thereby, improving durability and a sealing property.
