An extensible legrest mechanism for a seating unit including longitudinally movable struts (16) which support a leg-supporting member (18). A support assembly supports the struts in a cantilevered manner. The legrest assembly is biased toward its extended position by a spring (58), a reel (54), and a flexible member (56). Brake shoes (76) are engageable with the struts to prevent longitudinal strut movement. The leg-supporting member is pivotally connected to the struts. A resiliently biased manually retractable latch (120) is provided to hold the legrest at its extended and/or retracted position. A reclining back (208) is connected to a base by a mechanism including a gas spring (228). The ends of the gas spring are connected to upper and lower transverse members (230, 232) which are connected to mounting plates (222, 224) on the back and base of the chair or sofa. |
