A process for selectively separating and recovering sulphur dioxide form a gas flow containing it, by placing the gas in contact with an absorbent (an aqueous solution of a piperazinone or a morpholinone) and thermally regenerating the absorbent (i.e. releasing the sulphur dioxide from the absorbent for reuse in the contact operation) is described.
