There is often a sedimentation problem, in particular in combined-sewage syphons where water management for residential areas is concerned. This is caused by flow rates which are too low in the event of dry-weather flow. Consequently, in turn, backwater, etc. arises in the event of rainwater flow. In order to eliminate or reduce the sediment problem, the invention proposes to operate the syphon, in the event of dry-weather flow, at times as a partially filled line. This operating method is provided by arranging an additional, smaller line in the rising syphon branch in conjunction with a pump. During pump operation with partial filling, sediments are flushed out of the syphon.
