Physiologically active materials are immobilised onto a carrier via an alkylene oxide polymer chain, pref. one of formula: -(CH2CH2O)l-(CH2CHMeO)m- (CH2CH2CH2CH2O)n- (I) (where 44l/(44l + 58m + 72n) is not less than 0.5; partic. pref. are chains where m and n are 0). The carrier is pref. insol. in water and fibrous with a dia. of less than 1.0 denier. Suitable carriers include cellulose acetate, collagen, dextran, polyalkene, polystyrene, PVC, polyethylene terephthalate, etc. A wide variety of biological materials can be immobilised, including enzymes (e.g. asparaginase and urokinase), heparin, hormones (e.g. HCG), chondroitin, and antibodies. The biological material may be coupled with the polymer chain by introduction of an active group (e.g. amino, carboxy, epoxy, hydroxy, carbodiimide, aldehyde, isocyanate or imidazole) prior to reaction.
|
