<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for alpha-amino acid such as leucine, etc., in high yield at a low cost, by catalytically reducing (phenylhydroxymethyl)hydantoins with hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A 5-(phenylhydroxymethyl)hydantoin of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, OH, 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkoxy) is used as a starting raw material and subjected to catalytic reduction with hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal catalyst preferably at 50-80 deg.C. The objective compound of formula II can be separated from the reaction liquid by conventional method. The noble metal catalyst is preferably palladium and its amount is preferably 1-30wt% based on the starting raw material. The starting raw material of formula I can be produced by reacting a phenylacetaldehyde with hydantoin in an alcohol solvent in the presence of an alkali.</p> |
