The starter has a clutch with an inner race (31), housing a middle portion of a hollow sleeve (9), slidably via a helical spline engagement (92). An outer race (33) houses the inner race via rollers (35) at its larger inner dia. The outer race free end is fixed to an armature shaft (12). The hollow sleeve is provided at the other end of the inner dia. of outer race with an annular groove (93). A shift lever (4) is driven by a solenoid plunger (21) to reciprocate the sleeve to disengage or engage a pinion (91) with a ring gear (5) via an annulus plate (43). A wall of the outer race has an opening through which a portion (44) of the annulus plate extends radially into a groove (93).
