To avoid faulty output of characters in teletype machines in half-duplex mode after a break-in operation, the received shift signals (UB) are compared for correspondence with the transmitted shift signals (UA) in the teletype machine of at least one local station (A). This prevents the characters in the teletype machine of a remote station or in the teletype machine of the local and remote stations from being printed in the wrong shift (Bu/Zi). If the transmitted and the received shift signals (UA and respectively UB) do not correspond, the transmitted shift signal (UA) is retransmitted and, if necessary, repeatedly transmitted. <IMAGE>
