The stop valve for gas or liquid includes a lever which may be turned between limiting stops to open or close the valve. The control lever housing also includes a spiral spring which is held under tension, with a fuse element holding it. If the ambient temperature exceeds a set value (92 degrees centigrade), then the fuse melts and the action of the spring is applied to the valve lever. In the course of normal use, the lever may be moved between the positions defined by the two stops, without restriction but after the fuse element has melted, the valve is moved automatically into its closed position. The mechanism provides an automatic protection preventing the flow being continued in the event of fire.
