AL BASE ALLOY - SIC PARTICULATE COMPOSITES

A particulate composite having a continuous phase of a metal such as an Al alloy and a disperse phase, incorporated in the continuous phase, of a refractory material such as SiC. The composite is made by atomising a stream (12) of the Al alloy to form a spray (22) of metal droplets, and applying fine refractory material (24) to the stream or spray. The resulting particulate composite may be consolidated to produce solid products.
