To improve the flow of material in a disc-wheel or drum chopper, it is proposed to arrange an annular disc or friction drum behind the chopping wheel or within the chopping drum and to cause the rotating chopping cutters to cooperate directly with the counter-tools of the annular friction disc or friction drum so as to form a friction gap. The material to be chopped, in the particular portion just cut off, is thereby directly introduced immediately into the friction gap along the cutter rear side, without being thrown outwards beforehand. As a result of this uniform feed of material without bunching together, the chopper works smoothly, has a high throughput and is of simple construction.
