An electrical switch is proposed whose electrical switching contacts can be influenced by means of an operating element, via a switching piece. The operating element is in this case mounted displaceably on the insulating material housing and the switching piece is mounted on the insulating material housing such that it can rotate. A component which is supported in a sprung manner on either the switching piece or the operating element and is assigned to a profile track provided in the operating element or switching piece respectively is arranged between said switching piece and operating element in order that the operating element describes an operating path which is independent of the path which the switching piece must travel in order to cause the contact parts to switch over and for the purpose of the operating element additionally returning automatically from the switching positions to its quiescent position after being released or automatically assuming its quiescent position after any existing latching is released. The effective length of the path travelled by the component on the profile track is limited to the intended free play (idle path) by means which are provided on at least one of the two parts.
