The invention relates to a method for producing a trip signal as a function of the behaviour of an overcurrent, in the case of which method digital values which are derived from the overcurrent are added up on a weighted basis, and the trip signal is formed at a predetermined total value. In this case, the digital values which are in each case produced last are stored, the stored values are compared with one another and are used to derive a criterion possibly for reversing the summation. In the case of such a method, in order to produce reporting signals which unambiguously provide information on the ongoing formation of a trip signal, once a predetermined threshold value has been exceeded for a predetermined time interval, monitoring is carried out to determine whether the respectively stored maximum value is above the response threshold. If this is the case, then the reporting signals (alarm signals) are produced, and the predetermined threshold is reduced to a lower level. <IMAGE>
