Shaped teeth are formed on the periphery of a cylindrical blank by rolling bidirectionally between profiled die faces, simultaneously feeding blank axially between the moving die faces. The dies which may be cylindrical or flat faced, are mounted opposite each other at a predetermined distance and movable in opposite directions. The method is characterised in that at each change of direction, die movement is essentially stopped and axial movement of the blank is also stopped. Appts. comprises, pairs of dies with face profile corresponding to tooth form required together with supporting device for blank, feed mechanism for axially moving blank, and reciprocating mechanism for moving dies.
