A control system for a selector mechanism for a vehicle provided with a clutch (1) and a continuously variable transmission (2) having operational ranges such as a "drive" range and a "reverse" range. A synchronizer (27) is provided for selecting the forward or reverse gears. A selector lever (100) is provided for operating the synchronizer (27) for the selection of the ranges. A control unit (145) is provided to respond to the selection of a range so as to delay engagement of the clutch until after engagement of the synchronizer (27).
