This invention pertains to a process for producing dinitrotoluene by reacting mononitrotoluene with nitric acid. The process involves adding nitrogen dioxide and oxygen mixture to the reacton medium in essentially stoichiometric quantities to generate nitric acid in situ to maintain concentration. The utilization of the nitrogen dioxide and oxygen provides for a convenient way of producing dinitroaromatic compounds with high nitric acid efficiencies.
