Heating apparatus for heating water, which has a jacket (6) of any desired configuration, in which there is arranged, downstream from the flame, a heat exchanger (11), preferably made of aluminium, which consists of a water chamber (12), at whose side facing the flame there are arranged ribs (25) which form flow channels which for the most part run transversely to the flame axis. By the arrangement of a bypass flap (21) in the ribbed exchanger (11), it is possible to raise the waste-gas temperature with little loading of the furnace chamber, so that with one apparatus size a power requirement of 10-30 kW can be covered. <IMAGE>
