The bypass unit facilitates the servicing of the meter without the gas supply being interrupted. The valve (1a) is assembled of a housing (2) accommodating a ball-shaped locking element with an opening for normal use (6) and an opening (7) for using the bypass unit. A plug (14) with a treaded lower segment and an upper area with an insertion recess (15) for a special tool is guided through a bore (27) in a sleeve (21) with a conical front (24) into the bypass opening (7) preventing an unintentional release of gas before the tube connection between the bypass openings (7) is installed.
