A process for connecting plastics such as polypropylene, which have a cross linked foam structure, comprises locating the components (16,18) to be welded between the sonotrode (12) and the opposing electrode of an ultrasonic welding unit. The sonotrode is adjusted relative to the opposite electrode, and the sonotrode is then excited before or during contact with the component. The sonotrode is then adjusted again so that it exerts a small pressure on the component, and the components are warmed and pressed together. The sonotrode is still during the warming phase.
