Antimicrobial compositions having a rapid antiviral and antibacterial Effectiveness, and a persistent antiviral effectiveness, are disclosed. The antimicrobial compositions contain (a) a disinfecting alcohol, (b) a blend containing a C₁₂ to C₂₂ alcohol and an ethoxylated C₁₂ to C₂₂ alcohol, such as a cetearyl alcohol and cetereth-20 blend, a cetearyl alcohol, steareth-20, and steareth-10 blend, or a mixture thereof, (c) an optional organic acid and (c) water.
