<p>PURPOSE:To attain rapid printing with high contrast by orientating ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules so that their main orientating direction approximately coincides with the longitudinal direction of an optical shutter array. CONSTITUTION:One surface of a transparent glass substrate 1 is contacted with a polarizing plate 2 and a transparent electrode 4, an opaque metallic electrode 5 and an orientation layer 6 are formed on the other surface. The surface of the orientation layer 6 is rubbed in the same direction as the longitudinal direction of the optical shutter array. Two transparent substrates 1 processed by said procedure are stuck to each other through spacers 3 so that both the orientation films 6 are opposed to each other to form a cell and a ferroelectric liquid crystal material 7 is injected into the cell to form the optical shutter array. The optical shutter array is rubbed in the approximately same direction as the longitudinal direction of the transparent substrate 1, the liquid crystal material 7 is uniformly and efficiently orientated in the approximately same direction as the longitudinal direction as the substrates 1.</p> |
