The invention relates to a process for purifying gas streams containing solvent vapours and/or other environmentally polluting substances, and for separating off the solvent vapours and/or the other substances by binding the solvent vapours and/or other substances on an absorbent packing and regenerating the absorbent packing, loaded with the solvent and/or the other substances, by flushing, desorption with the use of a vessel containing an absorbent and cooling, in which the regeneration of the laden absorbent packing(s) is carried out by passing the regeneration gas from this absorbent packing or these absorbent packings into a regeneration unit provided with an auxiliary adsorber containing an absorbent which absorbs the solvent and/or other substances, the regeneration gas being conducted in the laden absorbent packing in counter-current during the desorption and in co-current during cooling, and the solvent vapours and/or substances bound to the packing of the auxiliary absorber being desorbed simultaneously with the cooling of the absorbent packing adsorption and regeneration being carried out repeatedly by cyclic exchange of the regenerated and the laden absorbent packings.
