Air is passed through the bed of inert material in alternating directions and heat energy is fed to the oxidation zone occurring in the bed. The extent of this zone (4) in the bed (10) is determined by temp. monitoring in the bed material and dependent upon the zone position in the bed, the times for changeover of the air current direction is determined. Immediately after the air current direction is changed through the bed, a heat-producing component (5 or 6) is activated. During a specific period the component transmits a specific amount of heat energy to the oxidation zone. |
