The invention relates to an improved process for making peroxycarboxylic acids and their corresponding magnesium peroxycarboxylates. In the process of the invention, an acyl chloride or anhydride is reacted with a source of hydrogen peroxide in an organic solvent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. If magnesium ions are also present during the reaction, the corresponding magnesium peroxycarboxcylates are formed.
