Slide valves in the cylinder head on spark ignition and diesel engines are characterised in that the slide valves in principle function as conventional cone valves but transversely to the stroke direction of the cylinder bore in the cylinder head. The drawing shows the operating principle of the slide valve. The slide valve is moved in the cylinder head by the rotation of the camshaft. When the slide valve running in the housing is opened, the medium can be directed through the inlet or exhaust ports. In the opened state, the housing on the top and under side has the same ports as the slide valve. In the closed state, the ports are not congruent so that the flow of medium is blocked. The width of the ports is dependent on the highest or lowest position of the cam of the camshaft, which is laterally mounted. The structural form can be modified according to the requirements (circular form, number of ports). <IMAGE>
