Catalytic methanation of carbon oxides in a hydrogen rich gas stream containing less than 2.5% by volume of carbon oxides is effected using as at least the initial 10% by volume of the catalyst bed, a catalyst comprising nickel and/or cobalt intimately associated with at least one difficulty reducible metal oxide such as alumina preferably together with a rare earth. 60-98% of the total number of atoms, other than oxygen and carbon (if any) atoms, in the catalyst are nickel or cobalt. The gas stream is preheated, by heat exchange with the gas stream emerging from said catalyst bed, to above about 130 DEG C.
