A device is described for transmitting a fluid level to a signal transmitter such as a visual display, having a guide pipe which dips into the fluid and in which the position of a float which dips partially into the fluid can be transmitted to the signal transmitter via a transmission means guided in the guide pipe. A reliable transmission means which is simple to manufacture and also adapts to bends in the guide pipe consists of spherical elements whose external diameters are slightly smaller than the internal diameter of the guide pipe. The device is suitable in particular for determining the level of lubrication oil in an internal combustion engine.
